Health Insurance
Rollins College provides a mandatory health insurance policy for all international students and U.S. citizens who permanently reside outside the U.S.
Students are automatically enrolled in the annual policy. Student accounts are directly charged the premium for an annual period August 1 - July 31. If new students enter the U.S. before August 1, they should buy short-term health insurance for coverage until the Rollins policy begins. Students with an insurance policy comparable to the Rollins plan may apply for an Alternate Insurance Waiver Form (AIWF) for consideration prior to August 15 for Fall and December 15 for Spring. The form is available here by selecting your specific insurance program listed and then "Program Tools." If students are denied the waiver, they may submit additional or new information as an appeal within 10 days of the denial for reconsideration of the decision.
Information on the program is available at www.insuranceforstudents.com/rollins. Treatment of dental or eye care is not covered. If students wear contact lenses or eyeglasses, it is a good idea to bring an extra pair and a copy of their prescription. We recommend having needed dental work before coming to the U.S.
Students should also purchase health insurance for family members accompanying them to the U.S. The company that insures Rollins international students can provide coverage for a spouse and/or children at cost to the student.
J-1 scholars and J-2 dependents are required to have a minimum health insurance set by immigration regulations (see below). The Rollins College student health insurance policy meets these requirements, which include:
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
- At least $50,000 in benefits for medical evacuation (cost of expenses if someone must be sent home because of serious illness or injury)
- At least $25,000 in benefits for repatriation of mortal remains
- A deductible of $500 per accident or illness
J-1 scholars may purchase this plan for their J-2 dependents or may purchase coverage from another company. Failure to carry health insurance for yourself and your family are grounds for termination from the J-1 program.

Health Care System in the U.S.
The U.S. health care system is considered a private system made up of private doctors, urgent care centers, and hospitals. Below is a description of the types of providers available to our students.
Rollins Wellness Center
The Wellness Center is available to all full-time students and provides basic medical care and health education for students free of cost. More information can be found at the Wellness Center website.
Private Doctor Office
Many doctors work in their own medical practices and will require payment ahead of treatment unless proof of medical insurance is provided. Students save money by using the Wellness Center before going to a private doctor.
Clinics
Advent Health Centra Care, Guidewell Emergency Doctors, and Walgreens Health Care Clinics are walk-in clinics that provide medical treatment. They can treat a variety of ailments and will be less expensive than going to the emergency room for a non-life-threatening illness. They accept many health insurance policies.
Emergency Rooms at Hospitals (ER)
ERs should only be used for life-threatening ailments and severe accidents requiring immediate medical attention. For a medical emergency, call 911 for immediate assistance and transport to a hospital. The emergency room is the most expensive of medical providers. Most health insurance policies will cover emergency room care after deductibles or an ER copay are met.
