Developing skilled, experienced secondary teachers
Rollins’ MAT in Secondary Education prepares students for success in and beyond the classroom. In the fall, five courses lay the foundation for a career in education as well as working with English Speakers of Other Languages. Spring coursework focuses on content-area literacy and engagement strategies alongside two 50-hour pre-internships. A six-week summer course in curriculum and assessment prepares students for full-time student teaching in the final semester, supported by an evening seminar for reflection and professional preparation.
Leverage Your Expertise
Before enrolling, students must pass Florida’s Subject Area Exam (SAE) in their chosen field. MAT coursework then builds on that foundation—covering topics like instructional design, assessment, data use, and educational technology—to prepare candidates to teach effectively within their subject area.

Essential Experience
Hands-on experience is a cornerstone of the Rollins MAT – Secondary Education program. Before student teaching begins, you’ll complete two discipline-specific pre-internships—one 50-hour middle-school placement and one high-school 50-hour placement. This dual experience builds confidence across grade levels 6-12 and helps students identify the environment that best fits their teaching goals before committing to a full-semester placement.
Throughout the internships and student teaching experience, students are supported by a robust network of mentors. Rollins’ director of field supervision partners with local school districts to secure strong placements, while on-site teachers offer day-to-day classroom guidance and deep disciplinary knowledge. Each candidate is also paired with a Rollins faculty mentor in their content area, who observes, provides feedback, and helps chart next steps across all three field experiences.
